Extreme weather can be distressing for dogs. If you’re worried about the weather, keep your dog indoors as much as possible. Look out for signs your dog is anxious, like excessive barking, trying to run and hide, or pacing around your home.
How to keep your dog safe and help them cope:
Make sure your dog has somewhere safe to hide, like their bed or a den. If your dog wants to hide away then don’t force them to come out of their hiding place – let them stay where they feel safe.
Close curtains, turn lights on, and turn up the volume on your TV or radio to mask the sounds of the storm.
If the weather’s bad enough to disrupt your dog’s exercise routine, keep them busy with indoor activities instead – like a toy filled with food. Games can also be a great distraction from any unsettling sounds.
If you’re able to go outside safely, keep your dog on a lead in case they get scared by any sudden noises.
If you’re near an area that may flood, keep your pet away from flood water as it could contain sewage and dangerous toxins. If they do go in any flood water, wash them thoroughly.
